The wave nature of desire.
Every habit you can't quit exists because you're trying to quit the wrong thing.
Ancient monks called it vedana — feeling tone observation. They discovered that every craving follows the same arc: it emerges, builds to a peak, then dissolves on its own. Always. Without exception. They measured it at roughly ninety seconds.
They called this the wave nature of desire.
The monks discovered that craving has a lifespan.
Modern neuroscience confirmed it. When experienced meditators encountered cravings, they didn't suppress them. They added a second layer of awareness — one that could watch the first layer experience desire. The craving ran its course. The urge passed. No willpower required.
The brain learns fast: if you act during the ninety seconds, it expects action next time. If you observe, it learns that cravings are weather — temporary, self-resolving, not instructions.
The difference between craving content and craving process.
You cannot eliminate triggers. Life is full of them. But every desire — regardless of its object — follows the same neurological sequence. That sequence is the thing to work with.
Most of us experience desire as a command.
The practice treats it as data.
Commands demand action, but data invites investigation.
Change your relationship to the craving, because you cannot remove the craving itself.
The wave always passes.
You only have to watch.
